CAT VARC Strategy 2026: RC Accuracy First
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension is the opening 40-minute section. High percentiles come from passage selection, inference discipline, and VA reliability — not vocabulary cramming alone. Use this plan with the full CAT syllabus 2026 map and mock analysis framework.
What VARC actually tests
- Reading Comprehension: Main idea, inference, tone, detail, application — often dense humanities/science/econ prose.
- Verbal Ability: Para jumbles, para summary, odd sentence out, related coherence tasks (formats can shift year to year).
- TITA VA: Often no negative marking — attempt after securing high-confidence RC.
RC strategy that scales
- Skim structure first: thesis, contrast signals, conclusion.
- Answer from passage evidence; eliminate extremes and out-of-scope options.
- Practise genre diversity (philosophy, economy, science, culture) so exam day is not a shock.
- After mocks, tag misses: inference error, tone miss, detail miss, time sink passage.

Reading sources that match CAT RC tone
Coaching roadmaps converge on the same idea: train on dense non-fiction, not only exam PDFs. A practical weekly mix:
- Abstract / philosophy: long-form essays (Aeon-style) for inference stamina
- Economy / policy: Economist / quality Indian editorials for argument structure
- Science / tech: explainers that force tracking of claims vs evidence
- Culture / history: narrative-argument hybrids that punish skimming
After reading, write one sentence: author's stance in plain English. That single habit transfers to RC options. Pair with adaptive VA/RC drills so difficulty does not stall at "easy newspaper."
VA practice loop
Daily micro-set: 1–2 jumbles, 1–2 summaries, 1 odd-one-out. Log mandatory pairs and connector words that fooled you. Do not let VA steal RC time on exam day until your RC accuracy is stable in sectionals.
Weekly VARC template
| Block | Work | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Daily reading | 30–45 min dense non-fiction | Faster structure mapping |
| RC practice | 2–3 passages most days | Error log by question type |
| VA set | Mixed jumbles/summary/odd-one | Connector pattern notes |
| Weekly sectional | 40-minute VARC mock slice | Attempt order + accuracy plan |
Adaptive practice for VARC
Static RC PDFs do not know which inference trap you repeat. AdaptHub keeps difficulty in your growth band and surfaces distractor patterns so remediation is targeted. Pair this page with the CAT 2026 study plan and start free on lifetime free pricing.
